Have you ever used Tumblr for blogging? It has been around for a long time and is part blog platform and part social network. According to Wikipedia (source), Tumblr hosts 475 million blogs and has 380 million monthly visitors.
Those are big figures, but Tumblr has had its problems over the years and it has been sold several times. It had a serious porn problem at one time, but owners Verizon set about cleaning it up and, at least in theory, it should be free of adult content. Now it is being sold (source).
Perhaps the cleanup was all part of a master plan to make Tumblr more attractive for sale and Automattic, the owners of the WordPress blogging platform, is now buying it.
What might happen to it? Automattic might try to move those 475 million blogs to WordPress and hope it sells plenty of paid plans. However, it might keep Tumblr as it is and offer paid plans with more features, as it does with WordPress.com. Either way, it will be interesting to watch what happens.
