I have an old MacBook Pro and it runs the latest version of macOS, Catalina. I think it is the oldest supported model. However, it runs it badly. When it was new, it was fast and responsive, but now I spend too much time each day looking at spinning beach balls and waiting for it to do the simplest of things.
Downgrading to an older version of macOS would solve the problem because previous versions are simpler, lighter, and require less horsepower to run.
Apple does not make it easy to downgrade though, but after much searching, I eventually came across a page that lets you download macOS High Sierra. I’m seriously thinking of going back to that version.
