The Apple HomePod was the smart speaker that was designed to revolutionize music listening in the home. It was large, expensive, but had great sound quality. However, it didn’t last long. Smaller, lighter, cheaper alternatives killed it off.
If you go to the Apple website and look at the HomePod page, it still shows the original big HomePod as if it was for sale. However, if you try to buy it, it is out of stock. There are no such problems with the HomePod mini though.
Audio experts say the original had better sound, but the mini is good enough for most people. It is one third the price, one third the weight and half the size. Apple’s HomePod mini was probably the main cause of the demise of the HomePod. Technology simply got better.
Couldn’t Apple have improved the original HomePod. Probably, but there is a bigger demand for small, light, cheap smart speakers, so it had to go.May 17, 2021 at 8:29 am #4978jasonbear
That’s just the way technology is. Things get smaller, better, faster. I remember my first laptop weighed 18 pounds and was huge. It was like lugging around a suitcase full of rocks!
Who had an early mobile phone? You sometimes see them in films from the 80s or 90s where they are huge black bricks, sometimes attached by a cable to portable battery pack.
Tech just keeps getting better and Apple HomePod was a victim of this.
